Morning comes like a fox in the bushes

wild
the smile goes,
wilding
and shining.

the flowers
say
yes
and loom in the gaps
between wrought
iron,
and wooden fences
bleached in the sun.

my eyes
crinkle
like a two-euro coin,
double-coloured
and worth a cup of coffee
with change.

this
is a day
like I live for
and every day
is a day
just like this.

DS Maolalai is from Ireland. His first collection, Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden, was published in 2016 by the Encircle Press, and his second, Sad Havoc Among the Birds, by Turas Press in 2019.
