JEFFREY LETTERLY

Interview with the Finger

To be honest, it didn't go that well.
Did you expect that it would?
That I would glean some piece
of knowledge or personal story
that you wouldn't know otherwise?

I did get a deeper glimpse
into its opinion on several subjects,
as I sat in an uncomfortable wooden chair
with the finger on the table in front of me –
accusing, pointing, digging in –
the wrinkles around its knuckles more expressive
that you ever imagined they could be.

The One Thing

I sent an email to my grandmother,
now three and a half years dead –
What do you miss about Earth?

There was no undeliverable message,
so I pretended to wait,
imagining her pondering an answer
about her family, her long friendships,

the Jackie Kennedy vase complete
with black mourning gloves. Five weeks
later, a response at 3am:

The dandelions that grew
in the corner of the backyard,
where our chain-link fences met.
